The British man, 35, has been identified as the victim of Sydney's first shark attack that resulted in a fatality in nearly 60 years.

A companion affirmed Simon Nellist kicked the bucket in the assault on Wednesday.

The victim has not been officially identified by the police, and his family has not provided any comments.

After Wednesday's attack, swimmers are prohibited from the water and most city beaches have been closed by Australian authorities.
A great white shark attacked Mr. Nellist, a diving instructor, just off Little Bay in east Sydney. According to BBC Sydney correspondent Shaimaa Khalil, he was a regular swimmer at the beach and a member of the city's Scuba Diving Social Club.

A spokesperson for the UK foreign office stated that New South Wales Police were in touch with consular staff. The spokesperson stated, "We are supporting the family of a British man, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Due to the city's long-standing use of shark nets and other deterrents in its waters, shark attacks in Sydney are uncommon.

In an effort to locate the shark, surf lifeguards on jet skis searched a 25-kilometer (15.5-mile) stretch of water from Bondi in the east of the city to Cronulla in the south on Thursday. Helicopters and drones are also being used by authorities.

Based on footage of the incident that was taken by a member of the public, the state government stated that its shark experts had estimated the predator to be a great white shark "at least three meters" in length.

A vicious and frantic attack has been described by a number of bystanders who witnessed the incident.

"[The person] was swimming and a shark came and went after [them] in an upward direction," Kris Linto told Nine News.

"We heard a yell and turned around; it looked like a car had landed in the water, and then the shark came in with a big splash," the witness said.
One individual related how he had been fishing on the rocks when he saw the swimmer being pulled under.

"It was awful. I'm trembling. I continue regurgitating. He stated to ABC News, "It's very, very upsetting."

Two hours after the attack, body parts were found in the water by authorities.

Witnesses and emergency personnel stand on the rocks near where the swimmer was discovered on Wednesday. The state representative for the region, Michael Daley, stated that the "horrific" incident had shaken the community. The casualty had been a standard guest. "[ "He] came here almost every day and swam," he told the ABC.

He stated, "There's a real dark pall hanging over our community today." Despite the fact that it was a beautiful day at one of Sydney's most beautiful beaches.
